Inflight safety tips
Earlier in the year, the FBI issued a reminder on inflight safety tips with regards to sexual assault.
While the risk of being the victim of such a crime is very small (the FBI investigated 124 cases in 2024 although estimates many more go unreported), there are a few tips they shared to protect yourself and recommendations for how to act if it does.
Tips to minimise the risk:
Make sure that your armrest is down to help maintain some personal space.
Select an aisle seat, middle and window seats are more hidden from view than an aisle seat.
If possible, avoid prescription sleep pills that could make you less aware of what's going on.
Limit your alcohol intake. Drinking on board planes intensifies the effects of alcohol due to the lower oxygen levels in the cabin.
If someone tries anything, brushing your leg or arm, as innocent as it may be, make a fuss and create a physical barrier, make it known to them that you will cause problems if they try anything. Assailants may test the waters and see how you react.
What to do if you are the victim of a sexual assault:
Make a fuss, make noise and tell them to stop.
Call a member of the crew and ask to be reseated. If you are in a window seat, ask to go to the bathroom and speak to the crew.
Reporting it immediately to the crew makes it easier for the authorities to investigate. When the doors are closed, the captain is the top authority, and the destination police can take over after landing. Other passengers will disembark and continue with their travels, making it harder to investigate. The FBI investigates crimes on a flight if it lands in the US.
