Travel tip #151: You don't have to be single to travel solo

Hi Reader,

How is your week going?

It feels like springtime has finally arrived at home; The beach huts are all open and beaches start to fill up in the weekend.

Are you following us on Instagram stories? We are taking you behind the scenes of our Swedish Arctic trip, a favorite of all the guests who have traveled with us. There is something magical about going truly into the wilderness, further north, at a quieter time of the year.

If you dream of winter wonderland and learning about Sami culture in a heartfelt way, come join us next year again. Pst! Every group has seen the Northern lights! We are so far north at a time of year when skies are clear that the chance is really high.

Come over to listen to this week's podcast episode where we dive deep into the controversy of unethical, exploitative travel.

This episode has gotten us quite a bit of "hate mail". We are not sure why or where it comes from, but you can't never make everyone happy and I guess the discussion touched some nerve. Have a listen and let us know what you think and if you want to make your holiday count and have a meaningful experience with us and the 15+ women we spend time with in Oaxaca, join us in October, November or December!

You don't have to be single to travel solo

One of the most common myths is that solo = single, or that solo = childless and both of these could not be further from the truth.

Most of our guests book solo and a large portion of them are either married, in a relationship and / or have children.

In the last trip I co-hosted in Japan, only 2 of the guests had never been married, the rest were divorced, widowed, married or in a relationship and half had children.

More than half of the participants in our annual Solo Female Travelers survey that is completed by about 2,000 women every year since 2020, are in a relationship.

One of the common questions in the group is from women who are not single and ask how others combine solo travel with being in a relationship.

There is guilt associated with leaving your family behind, leaving your children with their father or even with their grandparents if you are a single parent, and often, double standards are applied to men than women, with men getting a free pass if they travel for work or for any conference and leave their family behind while women are the recipients of harsh societal judgement.

Many of the guests who are in a relationship prefer to travel solo once or twice a year because their partners don't like to travel, can't take as much time off as them or is not interested in the destination.

Some women choose to take time for themselves once a year to recharge, or go on an annual girl's trip to fuel their friendship and connection.

As Meg, who is a single mum, always says, "you can't fill someone else's cup if yours is empty", and if solo travel is how you fill your cup, then you should feel empowered and in peace for doing so.

As an additional tip, I also wanted to mention that many of the women who travel with us choose a women-only trip because that is a compromise and a more "acceptable choice" for the respective families or partners than an independent trip, as they provide a safe and protected environment that appeases many of the concerns of loved ones.

If you are in a relationship and want to travel solo, know that you are not alone. Go fill your cup!
